Refresher course on ‘Structural Engineering’

Contact: 30 hours , Self study: 110 hours.

Total score to be achieved: 300

Desirable Qualifications

Graduate or advanced diploma in any branch of engineering, architecture or related sciences.

Individuals who are unqualified, but have substantial experience of building sites can also apply.

About the course

The course's main aim is to impart education and build capacities of qualified professions in the field, and shall be seen in ‘capacity building’ and continuing education perspective.

Course is intended intensive and expects candidates to achieve a certain minimum proficiency to work on structural engineering and design assignments. The course will give candidates resources, directions and confidence in order to undertake any real time design task.

This course also aims to communicate and instill ethical values in conduct of structural design and engineering practices.

Delivery: Time, Mode and Evaluation

The course has subjects on structural behavior, advanced mathematics, drawings and real time studio, which involve 75% of the candidate’s effort and rest are contact hours with the faculty as regular consultation. Certificate of completion will be provided once minimum 75% credits are satisfied.

Ideally, the course should take three months to complete, but a candidate must finish the course within one year's time.

Candidate needs to select two guides, who, in addition to our supervisor will certify the adequate completion.

Fee

Rs. 1,000 on enrolment

Rs. 10,000 on completion.

Course Content Outline

  1. Basic theory of structural engineering (Score 70, contact hours 5, 20 self practice)

Covers Structural modelling , Analysis, and Design

Evaluation is based on discussion, new findings, objective tests, analytical questions

  1. Sketching and Drawings (Score 50, contact hours 7, 30 self practice)
    1. Drawing and labeling drawings in freehand – 10
    2. Drawing and labeling drawings in scale (computer or manually) – 10
    3. Drawing working plans, elevations, sections and details– 10
    4. Scaled isometric – 10
    5. Freehand perspective, 1, 2 and 3 point - 10

  1. Design studio (Score 100, contact hours 5, 30 self practice)
Although contemporary and heavy engineering requires use of materials such as steel, cement and composites, we are also exploring other structural materials such as timber, stone, bricks and mud.

Existing and conceptual projects can be taken up

Candidate has to identify and define his own problem statement, complete the module as a simulation to a live problem, and in the end submit a report with presentation

  1. Ethics of structural engineering and design (Score 30, contact hours 3, 10 self practice)

This is a professional practice oriented module. It is divided into hourly sessions, self reading based and discussed.
